Teacher, Art Facilitator
I have worked as Artist in Residence at Day Care Centers and Elementary Schools where exploration of materials and art based learning are encouraged.  Children, when presented with an unfamiliar material (such as wire) will create the most amazing sculptures.

As an art educator, it is my job to facilitate the experimentation and expression of art with children. I submit materials to children, teach them about safety, discuss some basic techniques and tools, then give them time to explore how metals fit together, how balance can affect a sculpture, how weight can affect the stability of a sculpture.  It's always a science, math, art experiment.

I try not to plan much more than what materials to bring to a residency.  The children’s interests dictate the outcome of a residency.  I'm optimistic that future educational systems will encourage art based learning as an option for children who have not thrived in the traditional school environment.
A residency may span one through four weeks at your site.  The following are to be compensated to the artist prior to the beginning of the residency: lodging (if applicable), transportation, material and supply costs.  I will bring all required safety equipment, hand and power tools with me.  Feel free to bring any tools to the residency that you feel may assist the students to complete a sculptural experience.  Much of a residency is about discovery, so recycled metal that can be solicited from parents and teachers prior to my visit is appreciated.
